We would all agree that the most joyous, festive and favored time of the year for most people is surely the holidays. Festive colorful decorations that add to the ongoing celebrations, all the celebrating and gift giving and exchanging and even those delicious dinner spreads and desserts, are all often enjoyed more with a crackling fire glowing in your fireplace. With that said, the folks here at All Year Chimney Sweeps & Repair want to pass along some fireplace safety tips to all our valued clients to practice this holiday season.
The sad and even tragic fact is that all those cherished holiday memories you are creating can actually all ‘go up in smoke’ if your fireplace causes a destructive house fire. Before the holidays arrive, we strongly recommend you take safety precautions that are geared toward those homes equipped with either a fireplace or wood burning stove. Some of those important safety tips are discussed below.
For starters, we highly recommend having your fireplace cleaned by our professional chimney sweep crew at least once per year to ensure the overall safety and functionality of your fireplace. There are a variety of threats your fireplace can present with that are quickly eliminated when a professional chimney sweep is performed. Whether creosote, glaze, soot or cracks in the lining of your flue, each can be avoided if you perform proper cleaning and maintenance annually.
Our professional team is equipped with all the appropriate tools and equipment to perform a state of the art chimney cleaning and sweep. Our highly advanced techniques assure you that your home will remain clean from start to finish and our timelines are both attractive and accommodating to your individual needs. Surely a festive fireplace can help set the perfect tone for your holidays but proper safety precautions are a must do.
Additional practical and useful fireplace safety tips include properly functioning smoke alarms on every level of your home, the use of carbon monoxide alarms, burning only seasoned firewood that is low in moisture, and disposing of ashes properly so that hot ashes cannot result in a house fire. Further we want to remind all our clients not to place their wrapped Christmas packages or any gift boxes near to the fireplace since they are combustible. You should keep all these type items at minimum three feet away from any heat sources, whether a fireplace, portable space heaters or even candles.
You also want to avoid burning all that wrapping paper and those boxes in the fireplace since they contain additives that make them burn quickly and be sure to keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case you have any type of fireplace mishap. Finally, never try to dispose your Christmas tree by burning it in your fireplace since the wood is not seasoned and could be very dangerous to burn.
We hope you find these fireplace safety tips informative and useful and though we are suggesting you keep them in mind during the holidays, we highly recommend you practice them all year round as well.
