Ensuring Tip Top Chimneys Everywhere
How do we keep that chimney from becoming our enemy and remaining our ally, the friend we can count on to keep us warm and cozy in the colder months as well as the occasional chilly evening in the warmer months? We know that chimneys are in need of upkeep and care throughout the year, that’s why we named our company All Year Chimney Sweeps and Repair with a goal of ensuring tip top chimneys everywhere. Here are some tips for you to follow to ensure your chimney stays in tip top shape through all 365 days a year.
Regular Chimney Sweeps. Creosote built up from wood burning can decrease the draft and make your heating system inefficient. The danger of chimney fires becomes much greater, as well. Carbon monoxide poisoning becomes a possibility with poorly functioning heating systems. Sweeping allows for a proper inspection and removes any debris such as birds nests or other small animals that choose your chimney as their home.
Reline Your Flue. Upon a chimney sweeps inspection, they may point out the integrity of your flue is being compromised from cracks. Relining—replacing the flue with a UL listed stainless steel liner—will increase the performance efficiency and add years to the healthy usage of your chimney.
Install a Chimney Cap. They sit jauntily on top of the chimney, much like a ball cap on a person’s head. Chimney caps keep inclement weather at bay, as well as those avian friends who want to make your heat source their new home. If you use your fireplace as an active source of heating, a cap will keep downdrafts from being a problem, too. And weather will become less of an issue, adding longevity to the brick structure of your chimney.
Make Sure Your Metal Flashing is Integritous. Many problems come from flashing—the sheet metal, over time, pulls away from your roofline—or the tar which seals the gap between the bricks of the chimney and your roofing material simply breaks down. If there is leaking coming from your chimney, it is most likely coming from flashing that needs to be replaced or repaired.
Visually Inspect Your Chimney. Look for crumbling bricks or missing mortar, and use a keen eye to be sure your chimney isn’t leaning to one side or the other. Missing mortar joints will cause both the chimney, as well as potentially your roof, to suffer great damage. If crumbling mortar isn’t addressed in due time, your chimney may collapse. Unfortunately, we have seen this happen. It is dangerous and can become expensive on many levels.
We hope these basic tips help you keep your chimney functioning at its optimum and peak—tip top—performance for your home and family all year long.
